Family Room Renovation in Melrose, MA
Warm, Modern Family Room Renovation in Melrose, MA
This family room in Melrose, MA used to be the kind of space you walk through, not hang out in—drafty, a little tired, and definitely not cozy. Now it’s the room you actually want everyone to pile into, with a warm wood ceiling, better lighting, and a layout that finally makes sense.
From Demo Day to Dream Room
We started by tearing it right down to the studs. Messy, loud, absolutely worth it. That let us get rid of the old French door, fix the insulation, and run new electrical instead of trying to patch around old problems that would just come back to bite later.

Once demo was out of the way, we packed the room with closed cell insulation. I’m telling you, in a New England winter, that stuff is gold—less draft, more comfort, and you’re not cranking the heat all day just to feel your toes.
Tongue-and-Groove Ceiling and New Lighting
The star of the show is that tongue-and-groove wood ceiling. It pulls your eye up, makes the room feel bigger, and adds a ton of character without feeling over the top. We finished it with polyurethane, so it holds up to real life kids, pets, movie nights, all of it and still shows off the grain.
Then we brought in new recessed lights and a modern ceiling fan. Big difference. Instead of one sad fixture in the middle of the room, there’s even light for reading on the couch, watching TV, or just hanging out, plus actual air movement when it’s muggy.
Fresh Paint, New Doors, and Trim Details
After the ceiling and lights were dialed in, we swapped in new doors and cleaned up all the trim. Simple, clean lines on the baseboards and casings keep everything looking sharp without feeling fussy. We went with light, neutral paint on the walls and trim so the natural light from those big windows bounces around and keeps the room feeling open.
Even the “small” details mattered—like putting polyurethane on the new door so it can take daily use without getting beat up in six months. Little things like that are what make a finished room feel expensive even when the materials are sensible.
A Comfortable, Finished Space Ready for Everyday Living
Once we wrapped up the construction, the homeowners brought in the fun stuff: a big comfy sectional, a textured rug, a TV console, some plants and artwork. Suddenly this empty shell turned into a modern, cozy family room where you can actually picture Sunday football, board games on the coffee table, or crashing on the couch after work.
If you’ve got a room in Melrose or anywhere on the North Shore that you avoid more than you use, we can turn it into a space you actually live in.
